There are a series of photos that advertise every country in the world to tourists. For Japan, it is the Kyoto-Fuji view, Tokyo Shibuya crossing, and the Itsukushima Water Shrine.

On Miyajima island, also called Itsukushima island, there was a strong directionable scramble straight from the ferry docks to the shrine. Set out from the land, the floating torri gate is submerged only during high tide, in the morning and later in the evening.

There is more than just the gate on the island though, and if it was allowed I would come back in the summer and camp over the mountains. The highest point is Mount Misen, which can be hiked relatively easily up stone steps from a temple.
