An cancelled and rescheduled flight later, and I had a couple extra days to kill in Bulgaria. Looking randomly at tour packages, something I don't usually do, I found a ridiculously cheap shuttle to and from Rila Monastery. Being religious (I've seen enough churches, mosques and stupas thanks) and one of the most popular destinations in Bulgaria, I had no plans before to visit it.
It turned out to be a good decision though. It is a very intrically designed monastery parked within a valley close to the main hiking areas in the country (in fact, merely a few km from where I had hiked previously). I now plan to come back, and will stay a night while hiking through one of the larger trails. The vegan mekitsa donuts were quite convincing.
